Locations

PLEASE NOTE: All locations may not be available at all times, depending on guide or permit availability, weather, etc. This list is maintained only as a sample of some of our favorite southern-California-accessible destinations at which travelers particularly enjoy climbing.

1. San Diego Area Crags
The San Diego area boasts many small climbing areas well suited for year-round climbing classes and practice. Though most are not spectacularly scenic destinations, they are within easy access from the city for a day trip. These include such areas as Mission Gorge, Mount Woodson, and Poway Crags--all within 30 minutes of downtown San Diego. Other areas such as Valley of the Moon offer more extensive climbing and even scenic camping opportunities within an hour or hour-and-a-half drive.

2. Tahquitz Rock
A couple hours north of San Diego, an hour east of Los Angeles, and just west of Palm Springs, Tahquitz rock lies at about 7000 feet in the San Jacinto mountains. This historical area features hundreds of routes up to 7 pitches (1000 feet) long on perfect granite. This is Southern California's little slice of the Sierra, with free climbing to rival Yosemite, but with the added benefit of consistently good weather. Our personal favorite for multi-pitch adventure climbs, just above the charming mountain village of Idyllwild and all it's amenities.

3. Joshua Tree
Three hours northeast of San Diego and east of L.A., Joshua Tree is a world-class climbing destination. With over 4000 routes of all ability levels, surreal landscape, mild weather, and fantastic desert camping, this is a climbing Mecca.

4. Williamson Rock
High in the mountains north of Los Angeles, Williamson Rock is the prominent sport climbing arena of southern California. This granite crag contains hundreds of bolted sport climbs in a beautiful setting. Beginners and experts alike will be satisfied with the featured rock and challenging climbing found here. Climb for the day and take a drive home, or stay for a few days. You won't run out of routes to climb!

5. Baja Destinations
Baja California offers some very dramatic and extensive yet peacefully secluded climbing destinations such as Canyon Tajo.

6. Needles
The Needles of the South Sierra offers mostly very hard vertical crack climbing on fine Sierra granite. Featuring trailhead camping, and set in a high amphitheater of rock, this is a relatively unknown jewel of a destination whose guidebook has even gone out of print. Down below in town we may take an evening to visit our favorite Sierra hot spring.

7. Sierra Eastside
The Sierra Eastside stretching from the vicinity of the Palisades to Mt. Whitney, Mammoth to Tuolumne, offers some of the finest alpine climbing in the world, bar-none. These are extended adventures requiring advanced notice for permits, backpacking into the backcountry, and climbs of up to twenty-plus pitches at altitudes of 12,000-14,000 feet.

8. Bishop Area
Located 6 hours north of San Diego, the area around Bishop California offers a wide range of climbing. From the world-class bouldering of the Buttermilks and the Volcanic Tablelands (Happy and Sad Boulders) to the famous sport climbs of Owen's River Gorge, the rock and climbing never stops. After a day at the crags, there is nothing better than relaxing under the stars in one of the eastern Sierra's natural hot springs.

9. Yosemite
Yosemite ranks among the most famous and important climbing areas in the world, and it offers a lifetime of excellent climbing.

10. Red Rocks, NV
Just minutes from downtown Las Vegas, Red Rocks provides both excellent sport and traditional climbing in a beautiful red sandstone wonderland.

10. Zion, UT
Desert bastion of aid climbing, this is a favorite destination not only for its climbing but also for its scenic beauty, traffic-free serenity, and the exquisite Narrows canyon hike on a rest day.
